hello basketball coaches and basketball players my name is Alan from Al’s basketball training today I am gonna talk to you about what is a center in basketball and also what makes a good Center in basketball so well let’s get going anyways my name is Alan on this channel I show you about you generally speaking basketball plays drills and skills however today I am going to talk to you about what makes a good center in basketball so the biggest thing is well for one a Center in basketball is generally speaking the tallest player on
(00:45)
the court in the NBA you’re usually looking at a player who’s between six foot ten and taller the biggest I have personally seen in real life is a player called Yao Ming from way years ago who is seven foot six he was massive anyways these are generally speaking the most powerful players on the court taking away LeBron James and from there they are the strongest players so you’re gonna be seeing some huge huge plays from these players now the center over time has evolved it has changed back in the day with Wilt Chamberlain they were massive
(01:28)
they would go for layups and you could score huge amounts of points because they were so much taller from the rest of the players however recently there has been a huge evolution in that position on the court back when I was younger it was basically you’re stuck in the post even when I was in grade 8 and grade 9 I was taller than everybody else and those players were basically told you are in the post you’re not leaving the post you are not taking any three-point shots this is your spot this is where you’re going to be living and this is where you’re going to be
(02:01)
dominating now over the last roughly 20 years now I wasn’t in grade eight twenty years ago I’m only 27 right now in 2018 but in June I will twenty-eight soon so yes anyways but went back in those days too now so over the past roughly fifteen to twenty years we have seen a huge shift we have seen centers who at one point were dominant in the post to now being dominant from the three-point line near dirk nowitzki was one of the first of centers to actually extend his range out to that out to that area and now we are seeing it more and more Jonas Valanciunas from
(02:44)
the Raptors has become a player who can now shoot threes which is huge and I imagine trying to block a three-point shot from a seven footer blows my mind anyways the to become a really good center today for one you still need to be bigger and you still need to be dominant you still need to be able to get down to that low post for one get rebounds and four to be able to block the shots of your opponent’s you need to be able to play defense move your feet foot skills foot speed skills are very very important as we can see from matumbo way back in the day a huge shot
(03:29)
blocker Serge Ibaka is another good one to look at as well even though he’s not a center himself he’s a power forward but foot skills foot speed lateral quickness is very important to be able to block shots rebounds are huge as well same idea but now you need to know how to box out boxing out is huge to become a really good Center next is now the low post skill so there’s multiple different players and skills that you can do so somebody that we’ve seen a lot of basically Tim Duncan and there’s a few others who can get that basketball into the low post and how they are able to
(04:12)
score is not necessarily to be able to break down their opponent strength wise but it is able they are able to break down their opponent with fakes they’re able to do that shot fake come over to the other side and going for a layup or a dunk while then there’s other players more like Shaquille O’Neal who can take just back down the other player one two dribbles turn around and just poster eyes them now if you can combine as a player shooting skills plus being overly dominant like Shaq with the ability to do some ball fakes like Tim Duncan and
(04:54)
Luis Scola those three skills are going to be huge if you want to become a really good center so from my advice to you if you’re a young player and you want to become a center and you’re taller than everybody else still learn how to dribble that is still really big because I was six foot tall in grade six and I was six foot two and grade eight and I’m still six foot two today so I could have just learned the post and learned how to shoot and not learn how to dribble and I would have been lost when it came to grade ten but if you can learn how to dribble the basketball now
(05:31)
you are a complete player if you end up being a point guard or a shooting guard or if you’re a center and you still become a center in your like six foot ten seven foot seven foot two now you are a complete player still so even if you work on your dribbling skills I would still recommend doing that so now you can be a seven foot point guard or a six foot eight point guard like Magic Johnson so there’s many different things to work on in basketball however if you want to be dominant learn everything when you’re going up against the player in the post it does he need to be
(06:11)
dominated strength wise does he need to be dominated with fakes if he can if you can do both of those you’re golden and you are going to go very very far anyways I hope you have enjoyed today’s video if you have hit that like button subscribe if you have anything to add to this video leave it in the comments below let’s help out each other help out all the players who are coming up through the ranks and let’s get these guys going because the center position to me is my favorite position I played it up until about grade 10 I moved to power forward on
(06:47)
some teams and I move to point guard on other teams so the center position is still my favorite even today I am 27 years old I can’t run that much I’ve gained a hundred pounds and my knee is painful as hell I’ve gone through two knee surgeries so today I do not play point guard anymore I can if I really want to however when I play basketball if I play pickup games I am in that low post I don’t care if that guy is six foot six I have the weight I have the power and I also have the ability to fake him out and after I really need to I can pull
(07:22)
him out to the three-point line and be able to dribble around him to get myself an open shot because I can also shoot the ball as well so combining all of those skills into somebody who is a six foot ten or a seven foot player you are going to be hugely dominant and I would love to see you play anyways I hope you guys have enjoyed and I will see you guys tomorrow hello basketball coaches so yes this is a quick few second advertisement basically I just want to let you guys know that I have another channel called football coach Allen I go over football
